Chevrolet Orlando 2.0 VCDi LS
Diesel Orlando has lots of punch, and cabin comes with loads of kit
In our search for a top-value choice for large families, we wanted a seven-seater with lots of space and a dash of style, too. That ruled out obvious cut-price options like the Peugeot Partner Tepee, Citroen Berlingo and Fiat Doblo (all of which are too van-like), and the Nissan Qashqai+2 (too cramped in the back row).
The Chevrolet Orlando makes plenty of sense for cash-strapped family motorists thanks to its attractive aftersales package. If you need a car with this many seats, chances are money is tight – and the Orlando’s fixed-price servicing deal (which gives three years or 30,000 miles of checks for only £299) helps to trim running costs to 55.2ppm. Then there’s the added reassurance of Chevrolet’s five-year/100,000-mile warranty.
If that isn’t enough, the 2.0-litre VCDi claims 47.1mpg economy, while LS trim provides all the essential kit you’ll need, including air-conditioning and electronic stability control. And in true MPV style, you get handy features like an extra rear view mirror to help you keep an eye on children in the back.
Best of all, the Orlando doesn’t look like a bargain-basement model. The chunky, off-roader-style looks, practical cabin and torquey diesel engine make it one of the most appealing models in Chevrolet’s line-up.
The VW Touran 1.6 TDI S is available for less (54.6ppm), but its meagre 104bhp power output will make heavy weather of journeys with seven-up, so the 128bhp Orlando gets our vote.
