New 2023 Citroen e-C4 X goes on sale from £31,995

The all-electric e-C4 X is a new family-friendly crossover from Citroen

Citroen’s all-electric range currently consists of the Ami, e-C4, e-Berlingo and e-Spacetourer, but now there’s a fifth model joining the EV line up - the e-C4 X.

As the name suggests it’s based on the e-C4, but the ‘X’ model gains some influence from the new flagship C5 X. Prices start from £31,995 - £1,000 more than the entry-level e-C4. The e-C4 X is available to order now with first UK deliveries expected by Spring 2023.

The e-C4 X sits on the same e-CMP platform that underpins the Vauxhall Mokka-e, Peugeot e-2008 and the Citroen e-C4. In other markets there will be petrol and diesel versions - mirroring the e-C4’s powertrain offerings, but in the UK we’ll only get the pure-electric model.

The brand describes the e-C4 X as a ‘cross-design’ that’s an alternative to conventional family hatchbacks and SUVs, essentially integrating a fastback saloon body into the raised hatchback design of the e-C4. It’s not too dissimilar to a new model from sister brand Peugeot, the 408, but the Citroen sits on a different platform.

The front end of the car is taken directly from the e-C4. In fact, the car is exactly the same up to the B-pillar, after which the new roofline and rear end take over. The wheelbase is the exact same as the e-C4 hatchback, at 2,670mm, but at 4,600mm in length it’s 240mm longer - the entire stretch is added to the rear overhang.

The new rear end is also equipped with new LED rear lights, designed to look like arrows pointing inwards to the centre of the bootlid - which offers a saloon-style opening rather than a hatchback lid. A small ducktail-like spoiler gives the car a sporty touch, while the rear bumper is also newly designed especially for the e-C4 X.

Inside, the interior is almost exactly the same as the regular e-C4, save for some slightly different dimensions in the rear - the lower roofline changing the amount of headroom on offer but expanding the boot space to 510 litres (the e-C4 has 380 litres). Citroen’s Advanced Comfort Seats are standard, using a special thickened foam.

There are three trim levels available from launch. The entry-level Sense model features 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and a 10-inch touchscreen. It also comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, plus various safety features such as speed limit warnings, lane keep assist, a forward collision warning and a driver attention alert.

Step up to the £34,495 Shine version and you’ll get Citroen’s ‘My Citroen Drive Plus’ which has a new navigation system with voice command. The Shine uses the new infotainment software taken from the more upmarket C5 X, enabling full personalisation of the system by way of customisable widgets and more. A head-up display, reversing camera, automatic headlights and a heated steering wheel are all standard. The range-topping Shine Plus version of the e-C4 X kicks off from £35,495, adding Alcantara upholstery to the cabin and adaptive cruise control.

All versions of the e-C4 X in the UK come with the same powertrain. A 50kWh battery teams up with a 134bhp/260Nm electric motor, driving the front wheels. Citroen claims a range of 222 miles for the e-C4 X which is 5 miles up on the e-C4 thanks to a more aero-efficient body. 0-62mph stands at 9.7 seconds and the top speed is 93mph. Charging is handled at up to 100kW, enabling a 0-80 per cent recharge in around half an hour. From a 7.4kW wallbox it will take around 7.5 hours to recharge the e-C4 X, while 11kW three-phase charging compatibility will be optional.
