How to fit cruise control to a Discovery 2 - pictures

<span>The parts needed to fit cruise control include a master switch, the steering wheel control switches and the mounting bracket with screws.</span>

<span>To the right of the instrument panel, there will be at least one switch blanking cover. This is carefully pulled out and will unclip quite easily.</span>

<span>With the switch blanking cover removed, there will be a white electrical plug visible. This one was easily pulled out with a piece of hooked wire.</span>

<span>The white electrical plug fits in to the new master on/off switch. Ensure it is clicked home, then push the switch into place in the dashboard.</span>

<span>Turn the steering wheel to 90 degrees from the rest position to access the screws that hold the air bag (SRS) module to the steering wheel.</span>

<span>Using a Torx screwdriver (T30), the two screws are removed. They can be difficult to turn initially; self-gripping pliers attached to the shaft can help.</span>

<span style="font-size: 0.8125em;">The air bag unit is eased away without straining the harness until the red plug can be seen. Pull the plug, not the cable, to detach the air bag.</span>

<span>Set the air bag aside carefully with the soft side facing upwards, so that if it were to deploy the metal parts won’t launch everywhere.</span>

<span>The most difficult part of the job is making the hole in the side of the steering wheel casing for the cruise control switches to go through.</span>

<span>The hole was made by drilling around the marked area, cutting out with a craft knife, and enlarging to the correct size using a file.</span>

<span>The mounting bracket can be made by copying the radio switch unit bracket, if it was not supplied with the kit, although they can be found online.</span>

<span>The bracket fits over two studs and is held by two small set screws with thread lock. Part of it pokes through the hole in the casing.s</span>

<span>The wiring to the cruise control switch unit is already present within the steering wheel. It is a simple matter of plugging the switch in.</span>

<span>The air bag module is re-fitted carefully and the Torx screws tightened to approximately 10 nm. It is worth checking them after a few days.</span>

<span>The roughly made hole in the side of the steering wheel is hidden by the rubber overlap base of the switch unit, giving a factory finish to the job.</span>
