New 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT Concept E Performance arrives

Mercedes has previewed the plug-in hybrid version of the AMG GT sports car in Munich

Just a few weeks ago we saw the new, second-generation Mercedes-AMG GT unveiled and now attention has turned to the range-topping variant - shown off at the Munich Motor Show as the Mercedes-AMG GT Concept E Performance.

It may only be a concept at this stage but the bodywork looks production-ready, suggesting clearly the full reveal of the production version is imminent. We expect the final version to be called the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance when it does launch, taking plenty of inspiration from the GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door Coupe super-saloon.

In terms of design it looks pretty much identical to the regular AMG GT, aside from a charging port on the rear bumper for the plug-in hybrid system.

The powertrain for the AMG GT 63 S E Performance will be mighty. It should feature the same 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine as the standard car but that familiar unit will be mated to an electric motor on the rear axle to boost total output to over 800bhp. Mercedes says the car uses “technology transfer from the Mercedes-AMG F1 Team”.

This technology is likely to be lifted from the four-door GT PHEV model, with a 201bhp electric motor and a total of 831bhp and 900Nm of torque. Like the standard car, power will go to the road through a four-wheel drive system.

In the four-door, the 6.1kWh battery allows for eight miles of electric-only range and while the two-door will have a similar focus on performance, we expect its electric-only range to beat this thanks to the lower overall weight.

Pricing for the regular AMG GT hasn’t been revealed but we expect it to start around £125,000. As for this more powerful plug-in hybrid, a figure nearer the £200,000 mark seems likely.
