New Volkswagen ID.7 GTX officially teased
Volkswagen is working on a sporty version of the all-electric ID.7 saloon
The fledgling GTX brand is reserved for Volkswagen’s sporty all-electric cars and while it’s only featured on the ID.4 and ID.5 so far, the ID.7 has been confirmed as the next model to wear the badge.
The ID.7 GTX will be fully unveiled at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich between 5 and 10 September, just before the regular ID.7 saloon goes on sale in the autumn. Like other GTX models it’ll offer fairly mild exterior tweaks and an increase in performance.
VW has teased the ID.7 GTX showing a few close up images. The main changes will come courtesy of black gloss accents, a black roof, tinted windows and GTX badging. The interior will come with red stitching on the seats, dash and doors to match the exterior paint.
As a performance-focused, all-electric saloon car, the ID.7 GTX will go up against the likes of the Tesla Model 3, BMW i4 and Polestar 2. To help give it a fighting chance, Volkswagen has fitted a dual-motor system which we expect to be powered by an 82kWh battery - up from the 77kWh unit found in the ID.4 and ID.5 GTX models. Power figures haven’t been released yet but somewhere in the region of 400bhp seems likely.
Volkswagen says the ID.7 GTX is ‘fine-tuned for driving pleasure' thanks to a dynamics control system that can tweak braking, steering and the chassis depending on the driving mode.
The standard ID.7 will come with up to 435 miles of range in 82kWh form so with the extra focus on performance we expect the GTX model to fall short of this number.
