Best compact executive

Find out what makes a great compact executive car - with our guide to the top 100.

Another year and another class win for Mercedes’ latest C-Class, which leads the way in a sector of the market that’s all about image and quality.

Even though it’s BMW’s 3-Series that offers the best balance of performance and tax-friendly CO2 emissions for the all-important company car market, drivers say that when it comes to everyday use it’s Mercedes’ C-Class that’s the better bet.

In fact, the BMW doesn’t even make it into second place. Honda’s Accord seems to have been very successful in its transition from family saloon to fully-fledged compact executive, with its winning combination of quality, reliability and handling agility proving to be just the right formula in this class.

The rest of our compact executive top five is made up of two Audis. While it’s undoubtedly got greater strength in depth than its predecessor, the latest A4 is still pulling up just short of the standard set by its closest German rivals.

It’s the A3 hatchback that takes fifth place, ahead of its BMW 1-Series rival but not quite living up to its more costly four-door rivals.

The notable exception here is Lexus IS. While its predecessor was a tough compact executive to beat, the latest model hasn’t enjoyed the same Driver Power popularity.

What you said: "The best Mercedes to have for a small family. Easy to drive with good performance. Small enough to manoeuvre and park. Safe car for the family. reasonably fuel efficient too" - Mercedes C-Class Driver

"A very practical, well built car with some great features, perfect for the family or for work." - Honda Accord Owner.
