BMW X3 - Reliability & safety

The BMW X3 should prove to be a reliable and safe family SUV - we’d like some driver assistance options to be standard, though

The new BMW X3 hasn’t received its Euro NCAP rating just yet, although given that it sits on a revised version of the CLAR platform from the old car, we expect decent results. The previous X3 scored a maximum five stars from Euro NCAP, with good scores for adult and child occupancy.

Safety technology that features as standard on the X3 includes semi-automated driving and parking, front collision warning, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, a reversing camera and reverse assist.

The ‘Technology Package’ adds parking assistant plus and driving assistant plus, featuring the likes of a 360-degree viewing system, remote 3D view, a driving recorder and an anti-theft recorder. There’s also adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality and steering control assist.

BMW managed to secure three places in the top 25 of our latest Driver Power survey, which reveals the best cars to own. The X3 wasn’t among them as it’s too new, but the 5 Series and 3 Series – which use versions of the X3’s architecture – both featured.

Warranty

The BMW X3 receives a fairly standard three-year, unlimited warranty for the mild-hybrid versions. In addition to this, the PHEV’s battery is under warranty for up to six years or 60,000 miles.

Servicing

For £1,253, BMW will give your X3 its own service plan with a vehicle health check, servicing engine oil, air filter, fuel filter service (for diesel engines), microfilter, spark plugs (for petrol engines) and brake fluid. The plan is in place for the first four years of the X3’s life.
