Expectations surrounding the latest Mercedes E-Class should have been incredibly high. But the firm went for a low-key introduction – leaving us wondering how the car would fare against the competition.

There was only one way to find out, so we arranged for the saloon and coupé variants to meet their matches under the beautiful metal framework of a disused airship hangar in Farnborough, Surrey.

The result will have left top brass at Mercedes deflated, as the Jaguar XF and Audi A5 Coupé were declared comfortable winners in a double twin test special.
