BMW 320d EfficientDynamics
AS the first premium saloon with sub-110g/km emissions, this is a huge leap forward. Updates include a flywheel that lets you travel smoothly in a high gear at low revs, stop-start, brake energy recovery and better aerodynamics.
The car is impressive to drive, too, retaining the same crisp handling that makes the standard 3-Series so engaging. Factor in a 0-62mph time of 8.2 seconds, and the new BMW offers ‘green’ motoring without the trade-off.
BMW 5-Series
Ever since the 5-Series arrived in 1972, it’s been the saloon to beat. This sixth-generation model looks set to continue that trend. At an exclusive unveiling in Munich, we saw first-hand how the previous model’s controversial styling has made way for a cleaner, more sporty look, emphasised by a low bonnet and shark-like nose.An optional sunroof floods the leather and wood-trimmed luxury cabin with light, while even the dashboard has been designed for maximum driver involvement.
Double-wishbone suspension is said to strike the best balance yet between handling and comfort, while the Drive Dynamic Control system allows drivers to modulate throttle, steering and gearbox settings via Comfort, Normal, Sport and Sport+ modes.
Engines range from the 56.5mpg 520d diesel up to the 401bhp 4.4-litre V8 in the 550i. The new 5-Series arrives on 10 March priced at around £30,000, and the 520d follows in June.
