Porsche unleashes hybrid 918 Spyder

Porsche manages to pull off a shock with the unexpected debut of the Spyder supercar at Geneva.

Porsche hybrid 918 Spyder

Motor show surprises don’t get much bigger than this! Porsche stunned visitors to March’s Geneva expo (Issue 1,105) with the 918 Spyder – a plug-in hybrid that’s the spiritual successor to the Carrera GT.

Power comes from a race-derived mid-mounted 493bhp 3.4-litre V8. But the car promises a 70g/km CO2 output – as the engine is boosted by twin hybrid motors. One drives the front axle through a fixed transmission; the other is sandwiched between the engine and a seven-speed gearbox. They’re driven by a lithium-ion battery pack, and together offer another 215bhp.
