Mercedes SLS AMG
The chance to drive one automotive legend is unusual... and two in one day is very rare indeed! Yet that’s what happened when we celebrated the arrival of the SLS.
Say hello to one of the most memorable cars of 2010. Mercedes’ mighty new SLS AMG had a lot of hype to live up to. Its gullwing doors and retro styling could have masked a mildly tweaked SL and left us cursing the marketing men once again.
Thankfully, the SLS proved to be anything but a disappointment. In its first outing with Auto Express in Issue 1,120, the Merc met its most formidable match – the model that inspired it. The 300SL from 1954 had beautiful styling,
a tactile feel and involving dynamics, but even the presence of a legend couldn’t detract from the new SLS’s abilities.
With an incredible exhaust note, breathtaking speed and handling to match, this is one Mercedes that leaves nothing to be desired. We recorded 0-60mph in 4.1 seconds, while in-gear acceleration would leave almost everything else on the road in its wake.
Boasting the feel of a muscle car, but with the dynamics of a sports car, the SLS shows what AMG is capable of. When we described the SLS as a fully paid-up member of the supercar club, we weren’t exaggerating – this is the most special Mercedes in decades.
