Changes to the MOT

An update to the MoT test would see the service intervals getting longer.

Changes to the MOT

Plans to revamp the MoT test for older cars have been on the drawing board since before the General Election, but the debate will come to a head in 2011.

The current system is known as 3-1-1, because the first test takes place after three years, then annually after that.

A proposed update would change it to 4-2-2, but the service industry is concerned that garages will close, jobs will go and it will compromise road safety. Also due to start in 2011 is a consultation on the Lorry Road User Charge scheme, which would see HGV operators billed on a pay-as-you-go basis for the miles they travel. Will it lead to a similar system for car drivers? The Government says not, for the moment at any rate.
