Renault’s electric dreams
Four zero-emissions cars debut as firm confirms plans for electric ‘refuelling’ network
Here comes the electric revolution!
Renault has stunned visitors to the Frankfurt Motor Show by unveiling four new zero-emission models, as part of its plan to become the number one producer of mass-market electric vehicles.
Among the quartet is the Zoe Z.E supermini, which has doors that open with the roof, and a 95bhp electric motor which gives it a top speed of 87mph.
A 100-mile range is achieved with solar panels and a climate control system which limits the amount of energy needed to regulate the cabin temperature.
To solve the high costs involved with batteries, the firm is planning an exchange scheme called Quickdrop.
Customers will drive to a station where the cells are removed and replaced with full units in three minutes.
The dead batteries will be then be recharged ready for the next customer.
Renault also debuted CO2 emissions-reducing technology for its current vehicles, including a new dual clutch transmission.
The firm is also launching its eco2 range of cars, which emit less than 140g/km of CO2, be made of at least five per cent recycled plastic as well as being 95 per cent recyclable and constructed in an eco-friendly plant.
The Z.E line-up is scheduled for a 2011 release, while the eco2 range will arrive in early 2010.
