Ultimate GTI unleashed

Mighty Golf R takes on Focus RS

Get ready for the hottest production Golf ever.

This is the VW Golf R and, as the successor to the R32, it’s set to face Ford’s Focus RS in the battle for hot hatch honours.

Power is from a 2.0-litre TSI engine, which promises to take performance to a new level.

The unit delivers 266bhp – that’s 20bhp more than the 3.2-litre V6 in the R32 – and is 35kg lighter.

The power hike has been achieved through the use of a bigger turbo and intercooler, while the new car will be more efficient, too.

Fuel economy increases from 26.4mpg to 33.2mpg, while CO2 output is slashed to 199g/km.

The car features a revised four-wheel-drive system, and should sprint from 0-60mph in 5.5 seconds, and go on to hit 155mph.

Large brakes ensure it stops just as effectively.

The suspension is upgraded, with stiffer springs and dampers, and the R rides 25mm lower than a stock GTI. Uprated anti-roll bars complete the package.

On the outside, a more aggressive bodykit sets the R apart.

A refreshed grille and 18-inch alloy wheels round off the changes – 19-inch rims are available as an option.

Inside, there are Alcantara-covered seats and R-branded door sills.

The Golf R is due in dealers early next year. Prices and full specifications are likely to be announced in January.
