Renault Clio Extreme eco2 dCi 86
Price: £12,690 (3dr), CO2 emissions: 98g/km
Unlike many rivals, Renault has opted not to create a special eco sub-brand. Instead, it’s slapped a subtle eco2 sticker in the rear window of any model that puts out less than 140g/km of CO2.
Yet this low-key approach doesn’t mean bosses aren’t focusing on sub-100g/km cars. The entry-level Clio Extreme dCi emits only 98g/km – the same as the Ford Fiesta Econetic.
This is also 17g/km less than the previous base model, and is achieved with aerodynamic tweaks, low-resistance tyres and taller gear ratios, plus a revised ECU and low-viscosity oils. With only 84bhp, the 1.5-litre diesel isn’t the strongest performer, and while the Extreme rides and handles well, it’s not as much fun as the Ford.
Standard kit is in short supply, too – air-con is extra. But the £12,690 price undercuts rivals, and the five-door Expression in our pictures costs only £600 more. So it’s a tempting choice.
