Our Driver Power winner proves Hyundais are now more than a match for European or Japanese rivals – the i30 is the top compact hatch. Bosses at VW will find it hard to accept that the MkVI Golf finishes below the Korean star.

But their latest car has done far better in this year’s survey than previous generations, and second is a great achievement. In third place is Renault’s new Mégane. Even though Toyota’s previous Prius hybrid featured in the top 10 overall, it can’t quite make it on to the class podium. Sneaking into fifth place is SEAT’s Leon – albeit some way behind in the Top 100.
